If The World Ends, It Ends with a Party

How does one survive a context where the death drive contaminates everything? With the political and social degradation that has been taking place in Brazil since the coup d’état in 2016, many Brazilian filmmakers have chosen to react and act through a life drive. This programme brings together some of those films in which partying and enjoyment are thought of as both potential and urgent. These directors assume that disaster is lurking: dystopian futures, the end of the world and even ordinary situations of oppression are a constant in these works.

But they decide to respond to them with an explosive and rebellious energy that proposes joy as a gesture of resistance. Daring to not care about good taste, without fear of ridicule, they recover the anarchic tone of the Brazilian Marginal Cinema movement of the 1960/70s, while reverberating pressing issues, mainly the empowerment and autonomy of dissident bodies and sexualities.
